Diversions – Great Lakes Waters

A Reference to examine and report the effects of existing and proposed diversions within, into, or out of the Great Lakes basin and the effects of consumptive uses on Great Lakes water levels and flows.

The IJC recommended that diversions and consumptive uses be monitored; the impacts of consumptive use projections be updated and assessed; the potential for new or changed diversions be reviewed; current public policies having an effect on consumptive uses be reviewed; the status of existing and possible future diversions into the Great Lakes be reviewed; existing and proposed small diversions be identified; better coastal zone management should be ensured; and that governments engage in a process of notice and consultation before additional new or changed diversions are approved.
