Lake Erie, Algae, and IJC Recommendations

Thanks to those who were able to attend and participate in our Harmful Algal Blooms Public Forums on Nov. 12 in Leamington, Ontario, and Nov. 13 in Oregon, Ohio.

About 100 people came out to each event, which consisted of a panel discussion during the afternoon and a public forum during the evening.

We heard from many important stakeholders at the sessions, which served as a way to assess how people feel about the ongoing issue and the pace of progress.

In summary, there is still concern about the problem of harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie, and support for measures to reduce phosphorus inputs to the system from agricultural and urban sources.

The IJC released its Lake Erie Ecosystem Priority Report in February, with 16 recommendations to the Canadian and U.S governments. We’re a few months away from the one-year anniversary of our recommendations, and planning to update the report in 2015.

The two videos below were compiled after the meetings, and offer a look at what was discussed by panelists and participants.
