Great Lakes Connection

The first quarter of 2019 brought the passing of two scientists who dedicated much of their lives to the Great Lakes, as well as an IJC Commissioner and board member from the region. We celebrate their contributions to science and policy and the rich legacy that will live on thanks to the dedication of these four individuals.

Across the Great Lakes region, residents overwhelmingly value the lakes and everything they provide – recreationally, economically and aesthetically. In binational polls taken by an IJC board, in person, and in letters and emails, citizens have expressed a deep caring for and desire to protect the Great Lakes. People also want the lakes restored to their full potential for themselves, for everything in the lakes and for future generations.

The US Environmental Protection Agency is developing a national action plan to address contamination and pollution from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), synthetic chemical substances that have persisted in the environment since their introduction in the 1940s and have been linked to human health problems. The EPA’s actions follow in the footsteps of Canada, which is undertaking its own effort to deal with these contaminants.

The Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition hosts its annual Great Lakes Conference from May 8-9 in Detroit, Michigan. The annual conference brings together more than 300 Great Lakes advocates, scientists, citizens and government leaders to discuss challenges and opportunities in the ongoing effort to restore and protect the Great Lakes.

Inland Seas Education Association (ISEA) is one of many organizations around the Great Lakes that provides educational opportunities for individuals to develop a personal relationship with the waters. From teachers and students to individuals and families, the Suttons Bay, Michigan-based nonprofit inspires people to be curious about the Great Lakes and encourages them to look after this awesome resource. Hands-on programming takes place aboard tall ships, along the shore and in the Capt. Thomas M. Kelly Biological Station.
