The Health Professionals Advisory Board conducted a proof-of-concept pilot study to assess whether it is feasible to collect comparable, binational water quality and population health data for locations around the Great Lakes, and whether such data could be used to generate conclusions and examine meaningful policy questions about water quality, environment, and health interactions in Great Lakes communities. The Phase 1 report, completed in 2017, confirmed the feasibility of collecting comparable, binational water quality and population health data. The Phase 2 report, completed in 2021, modelled potential exposure sources and weather events, revealing spatiotemporal patterns of waterborne acute gastrointestinal illness cases. A one-page graphic summarizes the Phase 2 report finding that heavy precipitation events, preceded by dry weather, can predict the risk of waterborne illness.

A peer-reviewed article based on this project was published in the Journal of Water and Health in April 2022 (DOI: 10.2166/wh.2022.018) and is open access.
