INTERNATIONAL JOINT COMMISSION'S GREAT LAKES WATER QUALITY BOARD AND TORONTO AND REGION REMEDIAL ACTION PLAN (RAP) HOST PUBLIC WORKSHOP ON MAY 13

May 6, 1999 Toronto, Ontario -- The International Joint Commission's (IJC) Great Lakes Water Quality Board and the Toronto and Region Remedial Action Plan (RAP) are hosting a one-day public workshop entitled "Toward a Watershed Monitoring Framework for the Toronto Region" on May 13, 1999. This public forum will focus on a monitoring framework that is designed to help assess the health of watershed ecosystems and the progress toward restoring beneficial uses in those watersheds. The meeting is free of charge and open to all citizens concerned with water quality in the Toronto area. It is being held Thursday, May 13 at Black Creek Pioneer Village, 1000 Murray Ross Parkway in Toronto. Seating is limited; reserve your seat by calling Tija Luste at the Waterfront Regeneration Trust, (416) 943-8080, x.231.

The workshop will include:

  • presentation of the proposed monitoring framework and other innovative monitoring approaches,
  • break-out sessions of watershed monitoring issues, and a
  • special session on contaminated sediment issues.

The workshop also will provide an opportunity for agencies, municipalities and community groups to discuss recommendations arising from a series of previous workshops and investigations on watershed monitoring approaches. The afternoon workshop will feature a discussion on the assessment and interpretation of sediment quality data for the Toronto RAP.

The International Joint Commission (IJC) is a Canada-United States organization established by the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909 to help the two governments prevent and resolve disputes over water use along the U.S.-Canadian border. Under the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement of 1978, the IJC assesses progress made by the two countries to restore and maintain the chemical, physical and biological integrity of the waters of the Great Lakes basin ecosystem.
