International Red River Watershed Board to Host an In-Person Public Meeting

Winnipeg, MB.—The International Red River Watershed Board (IRRWB) will be hosting an in-person public open house meeting during the Red River Basin Commission Annual Conference Red River Basin Commission’s Annual Conference  on Thursday, January 19, 2023 from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. CST. The IRRWB assists the International Joint Commission (IJC) in preventing and resolving disputes relating to the transboundary waters of the Red River basin.

The dual purpose of the public meeting is to present a brief overview of IJC and IRRWB activities including objectives pertaining to water management in the Red River basin. In addition, the meeting will provide the public with an opportunity to ask questions and discuss current issues affecting the Red River basin, such as drought, flooding, water quality, ecosystem health, and the transfer of invasive species. The public will have an opportunity to share their views and concerns either in writing or virtually with the IRRWB.

In addition, the public is invited to listen to discussions among federal, state and provincial agencies, as well as local organizations on Thursday, January 19 from 1:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Items for discussion include:

  • Updates on activities of the IRRWB committees & IJC
  • Nutrient management
  • Hydrologic conditions (floods and / or droughts)
  • Reports from jurisdictions
  • Lower Pembina Flooding – Update
  • Current trans-boundary water resource issues and activities

Conference Registration is NOT required to participate in the Public Meeting OR the Open session of the IRRWB Meeting on Thursday January 19th. If planning to attend both, lunch would be on your own from 12:15 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.

The IRRWB is an independent bi-national group established by the IJC under the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909. The IRRWB assists the IJC in preventing or resolving transboundary disputes regarding the waters and aquatic ecosystem of the Red River and its tributaries and aquifers shared by Canada and the United States. This is accomplished by providing a forum for the identification and resolution of existing and emerging trans-boundary water-related issues and by recommending appropriate strategies concerning water quality, quantity and ecosystem health objectives.
